Issues | Economy & Jobs

Mike Michaud spent most of his life working in a paper mill.  He knows the meaning of a hard day's work and knows that Mainers are among the best and hardest workers in the world.  He has seen the good times and the bad in Maine's economy.  He also knows what it is going to take to get our state moving again. Mike is working hard every day in Washington to secure investments to create jobs today and promote technology and build infrastructure that will help Maine compete for the jobs of tomorrow.  Mike has also fought to deliver tax cuts to those who need them most.

MIKE MICHAUD WORKS FOR MAINE'S ECONOMY

  • Mike authored and passed legislation to create the Northern Border Regional Commission.  Similar to programs that have provided a boost to other rural regions of the country, the Commission would direct $30 million every year to high priority projects like transportation, energy and telecommunications infrastructure.

  • Mike continues to serve on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.  In 2005 he helped pass a bill which authorized almost $1 billion for Maineʼs federal transportation programs through fiscal year 2009.  This represented a significant increase over previous years and included $48.8 million for important transportation projects in Maine, including funding for the new Waldo-Hancock Bridge, the North-South Aroostook Highway, and the new Calais-St. Stephen Border Crossing.
  • Mike led the effort to nearly double the workforce at Limestone’s Defense Financing and Accounting Service (DFAS) office when it was threatened with closure during the BRAC process.
  • Mike voted to pass tax relief for middle-class families, protecting 19 million  families from the Alternative Minimum Tax.
  • Mike voted to pass the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act (HEART Act), which provides $1.2 billion in targeted tax breaks to military personnel and their families.
  • Mike co-sponsored and voted to pass the Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2007 – a revenue-neutral package that would extend critical tax provisions for small business owners.
